Sr. Network Engineer

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and work along side of operationally focused network engineers in resolving complex network issues
  • Define, document and maintain accepted baseline for all approved network equipment (includes hardware types, supported IOS versions, etc.).
  • Lead on-going research, evaluation, and analysis of existing and planned data network requirements to ensure improvement of network performance, availability, reliability and blending with new technology and concepts.
  • Define strategy and perform regular audits and risk analysis exercises on our data network assets.
  • Lead meetings to advise operations and/or management staff regarding the technical and conceptual aspects of network usage and related issues such as security.
  • Collaborate with security focused network engineers, Manager of Information Security, Server Operations, and End User Support to ensure our data resources are not comprised.
  • Participate in technical effort to assess and propose solutions for our disaster recovery plan.
  • Research, design, and manage network tools environment as well as and define requirements for upgrading of LAN/WAN and telecommunication systems.
  • Design a full featured, scalable, flexible, network lab environment that will support our diverse AVIT environment and promote the use of it as a staging/testing ground for pre-production designs and changes.
  • Utilize lab environments to recreate identified production environment failures or degradations.
  • Provide technical mentorship and training for less experienced Network Engineers.
  • Provide consultation services for our internal departments as well as affiliates.
  • Provide performance analysis reporting for continuous improvement of the our network.
  • Conduct detailed design reviews that include key stakeholder participation, test plans, detailed design drawing packages, back out plans, and performance/test results.
  • Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, integrity and fulfillment of commitments.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 10 years of enterprise level experience designing and deploying large, multiple platform networks, involving multiple global sites containing thousands of nodes incorporating various transports types and protocols.
  • Experience collaborating with management to set and implement networking policies and standards.
  • In depth understanding of network operating systems and open system protocols.
  • In depth understanding and working knowledge of Internetworking with IP communication protocol and the OSI model.
  • In depth working experience with various Cisco platforms and IOS’s.
  • In depth working experience with various wireless transports (802.11x, Cellular, Microwave, etc.).
  • In depth working experience defining requirements based on user criteria.
  • Thorough understanding of characteristics associated with WAN circuits/connectivity (DS-1, DS-3s, OC-3s, MPLS, etc.).
  • In depth knowledge of telecommunication circuits, bandwidth, as it relates to design criteria and implementation for user network requirements.
  • Solid working knowledge of the following network protocols/technologies: IP, TCP/IP, UDP/IP, ARP/RARP, BGP, OSPF, HSRP, VLANs, SNMP, NTP, IPSEC, GRE, QoS.
  • Strong working experience supporting high-availability load balancing systems.
  • In depth working experience with remote access VPN technologies.
  • Thorough technical and operational knowledge of Internet architectures and ISP connectivity.
  • In depth working experience and understanding of network security architectures and their implementation, including router-based ACLs.
  • Working knowledge of network management systems and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of PBX functionality, Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTNs), IP-based voice systems, and Voice Mail concepts.
  • Strong diagnostic, conceptual and systematic thinking skills, as well as excellent negotiation, communication and team working abilities.
  • Possess strong analytical and planning skills.
  • Strong ability to conceptualize, design, and integrate technology with the needs and functions of the organization.
  • Ability to communicate the potential of technology through verbal and written forms to all organizational levels.
  • Fundamental understanding with Linux servers and Linux networking.
  • Fundamental understanding of scripting in PERL, SQL, ASP, and various other shells.
  • Experience mentoring and providing training for less seasoned network engineers and other IT staff.
  • Ability to build network design drawings utilizing Visio is a must.

Education/experience/certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from accredited institution and ten plus years relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certifications (desired).
  • Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE).
  • Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE)
    • Routing/Switching.
    • Security.
    • Wireless Networks.
